Improving Literacy Skills: EMBARC summer reading camp is a 6-week summer camp for refugee youth, ages 5-12. The camp is filled with activities to help learn literacy skills while having fun. Youth-Led: Older youth from the refugee community ages 16-24 complete a two-week training to become literacy coaches, and help to develop and lead summer camp activities for elementary students. The camp started in June 2017 and is held in partnership with UNI’s Literacy Education program, Irving Elementary School, Waterloo School District, YWCA, West High School, Boys and Girls Clubs, Waterloo Writing Project, Family Literacy Project, Volunteer Center of Cedar Valley.
