Experience EMBARC: Settlement to Success

On April 10th, EMBARC hosted Experience EMBARC: "Settlement to Success," our first major fundraiser in many years. The evening brought together supporters, community members, and leaders to celebrate not only the journeys of Burma refugees building new lives in Iowa but also EMBARC’s growth from a small grassroots organization to the thriving resource it is today.

Our 2025 fundraising efforts made a significant impact on our journey. It was wonderful to see our partners and supporters uplifting our services through their contributions and by joining us this evening. This event reaffirmed that we are not alone, and gave me so much confidence that we can continue our community services. I am truly grateful for everyone’s support.

Over 120 attendees gathered at Franklin Jr High - Atrium, where the evening was filled with powerful stories, cultural performances, delicious Burmese food, and raffles. Guests heard moving stories and presentations from Nan Sein, staff member Grace Htee, Rep. Rob Johnson, and Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott.

One of the most powerful moments of the night came from Nan Sein, an EMBARC client who shared her journey of resilience after losing her husband. With EMBARC’s assistance in navigating insurance issues, overcoming transportation barriers, and addressing emotional challenges, Nan found the support she needed to move forward. She enrolled in EMBARC’s citizenship class and is now proudly in the process of interviewing for her citizenship—a true testament to how EMBARC empowers individuals to rebuild their lives.

The event featured incredible dance performances by the Arakan Dance Group, IDKBC's Girls Dance Group, and the Mizo Society of America - Iowa Branch, showcasing the vibrant cultures of the Burmese community in Iowa. Guests also had the opportunity to enjoy traditional Burmese dishes, experiencing the rich flavors of Burma for the first time. Throughout the evening, attendees participated in raffles featuring beautiful Burmese arts, traditional clothing, and handmade accessories that represent different tribes, providing a deeper connection to the diverse heritage that EMBARC proudly serves.

Thanks to the generosity of attendees, and 10 event sponsors, we exceeded our goals for the evening. The profits from the event will directly fund our programs and services. Every dollar raised will help refugee and immigrant families access critical support and build a future here in Iowa.
